With a streamlined tax filing process, the goods and services tax (GST) system has encouraged many small-scale start-ups and businesses to materialize in India. The new indirect tax regime has also eliminated multiple taxes, which reduces the intrinsic cost of products and brings in higher price efficiency for consumers.
Getting GST registration for your business can help you avail of several benefits such as a collateral-free loan, reduced procedural fees and easier tax compliance. However, it is important to know if your business is eligible for GST registration before you apply. According to the GST law, all businesses whose turnover is above Rs 20 lakh (Rs 10 lakh in special category states) should register for GST. This includes both manufacturing and service sector businesses. Persons supplying goods through e-commerce platforms should also get registered, provided their aggregate turnover is above Rs 40 lakh (Rs 20 lakh in special category states).
Once you've ensured that your business is eligible for GST registration, you can fill the application online. This form requires you to provide information such as your personal details, address, proof of place of business and photograph. It also asks you to enter your PAN number, email and mobile number. You can do this by visiting the official website of the GSTN. You will be provided with a unique application reference number for your GST registration once the information is verified by the portal. It will take a maximum of 3 working days for the concerned officer to approve your GST registration, provided all your details are valid. In case of any discrepancy, you will be required to submit clarifications through a specified procedure.
